According to the report, the current situation of dioxin pollution at Bien Hoa airport is very complicated. Although in 2009, 94,000 m3 of dioxin-contaminated soil was completed and quarantined in area Z1 of Bien Hoa airport, the southern area of Z1 and the western area of the airport still have more than 10 hectares of contaminated land.
In addition, about 5-7 hectares of ponds and lakes in the airport are also seriously infected, affecting aquatic animals and food chains.
According to the latest research results of Dong Nai Department of Natural Resources and Environment, in the period 2009-2010, 3/10 new pollution locations were discovered. By 2011, monitoring results found that 7/23 more locations had dioxin levels exceeding the allowable threshold, bringing the total to 10/23 locations contaminated with dioxin. According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, it is necessary to conduct an investigation of dioxin exposure in residential areas around Bien Hoa airport, identify infected people for timely support and recommendations.
Associate Professor Dr. Le Ke Son - Chief of the Office of Steering Committee 33 - said that Bien Hoa airport is the area with the highest concentration of dioxin in the world. Not only is it the most polluted place, there are also many fish, poultry and aquatic ponds in the area that pose a high risk of causing pollution to humans if these products are released to the consumer market. .
Mr. Son affirmed that by 2020, Vietnam will completely eliminate the amount of Agent Orange/dioxin in the Bien Hoa airport area.
